Frequently Asked Questions

Is this Character Counter free?
Yes. The Character Counter is completely free and works directly in your browser.
Is my text uploaded?
No. Your text is processed only in your browser and is never uploaded to any server.
What is counted as one character?
The tool counts user-perceived characters using grapheme segmentation when available. Emoji sequences, combining accents, and characters in Tamil, Hindi, and other scripts are each treated as the characters people actually see. In browsers without Intl.Segmenter, it falls back to counting Unicode code points.
Are emoji counted correctly?
Yes. When grapheme segmentation is available, a full emoji such as a family emoji or a skin-tone emoji is counted as one character and is never split apart, even when trimming text.
What is the difference between characters and bytes?
Characters are the visible characters in your text. UTF-8 bytes measure how much storage the text uses: ASCII characters use 1 byte each, while emoji and many Tamil or Hindi characters use more. The tool shows both so you can check length limits and storage limits separately.
Can I set a custom character limit?
Yes. You can enter any custom limit from 1 to 1,000,000 characters, or use a preset such as a social post (280) or a database field (255). The presets are convenience values and are not official limits for any service.
Can I trim text without breaking emoji?
Yes. The Trim to Limit button removes only characters beyond your selected limit and uses grapheme segmentation, so emoji sequences and combining-character sequences are never split or corrupted.
Does it support Tamil and other languages?
Yes. The tool supports Unicode text including Tamil, Hindi, English, and mixed-language content. It uses Intl.Segmenter where available and falls back gracefully in browsers that do not support it.
