How it works

  1. 1Enter your title or text. Type or paste any title, heading or sentence you want to turn into a URL-friendly slug.
  2. 2Choose your options. Pick a separator (hyphen, underscore or dot), set a maximum length, and toggle lowercase, Unicode letters, accent removal, separator collapsing and trimming.
  3. 3Review the slug instantly. The slug updates live as you type, with a URL preview, encoded version and character/segment statistics.
  4. 4Copy the slug. Copy the slug with one click and paste it into your CMS, blog or URL — everything stays in your browser.

Best practices

  • Keep slugs short and readable — Google truncates overlong URLs in search results, so shorter is usually better.
  • Use hyphens between words: they read naturally, work in every browser, and are the convention for most URL systems.
  • Turn on Unicode support to keep Tamil or Hindi words intact — turning it off removes non-Latin letters instead.
  • Numbers stay in the slug automatically, which is great for dates and versions like a 2026 article.
  • Clean, descriptive slugs improve URL readability and click-through, but no tool can guarantee search rankings.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Text to Slug do?
It turns any title, heading or sentence into a clean, URL-friendly slug. You can choose the separator (hyphen, underscore or dot), control the maximum length, and toggle lowercase, Unicode letters, accent removal, separator collapsing and trimming.
What is a slug?
A slug is the readable text portion of a URL that identifies a page, for example "how-to-bake-bread" in example.com/how-to-bake-bread. Clean slugs use lowercase words separated by hyphens and are easier for people to read and type.
Why use hyphens instead of underscores?
Hyphens are the widely accepted word separator in URLs. Underscores can be treated as part of a word by some systems, and dots are often used for file extensions, so hyphens are the recommended default.
What happens to punctuation and emoji?
Punctuation and symbols are removed. Apostrophes are dropped without leaving a gap, so "What's New" becomes "whats-new" rather than "what-s-new". Emoji are removed too.
Can it slugify Tamil or Hindi text?
Yes. With "Preserve Unicode letters" on (the default), Tamil, Hindi, Arabic, CJK and other scripts are kept intact in the slug. Turn it off to keep only A–Z, a–z and 0–9 — non-Latin letters are then removed and you are told so.
What about accents like café?
Latin accents are removed by default, so "Café" becomes "cafe". If you want to keep the accents, turn off "Remove accents & diacritics". Indic scripts are never affected by accent removal.
Can I set a maximum slug length?
Yes. Choose a preset (50, 60, 80, 100 or 120 characters) or a custom maximum from 10 to 300. Truncation never splits a word awkwardly when a whole word fits and never leaves a trailing separator.
Does a clean slug guarantee better search rankings?
No. Clean, descriptive slugs can improve URL readability and click-through, but this tool does not guarantee search-engine rankings — ranking depends on many factors beyond the URL.
Is my text uploaded or stored?
No. The conversion happens locally in your browser. Your text is never uploaded to any server, and no account is required.
