Options

Preserve Newlines affects Format. Remove Comments and Collapse Whitespace affect Minify. Script, style, pre and textarea contents are never modified.

Your HTML is processed locally in your browser and is never uploaded.

How it works

  1. 1Paste your HTML. Type or paste any HTML — snippets, templates, or full documents with a doctype, head and body.
  2. 2Choose indentation and options. Pick 2 spaces, 4 spaces or tab indentation, and optionally preserve existing newlines, remove comments, or collapse inter-tag whitespace.
  3. 3Format, minify or validate. Click Format HTML for pretty, indented output, Minify for compact output, or Validate to check tag balance without changing your input.
  4. 4Review stats and warnings. Inspect live element, attribute, character and line statistics, and read any tag-balance warnings with line hints.
  5. 5Copy or download. Copy the formatted HTML, download it as a UTF-8 .html file, or feed the result back into the input to keep editing.

Best practices

  • Format before you edit — a consistent 2- or 4-space indentation makes nested structure and missing tags far easier to spot.
  • Validate before you ship: tag-balance warnings point you at the line of an unclosed element or unexpected closing tag.
  • Use Minify when you need to save bytes, but remember it is one long line — keep the formatted copy around for future edits.
  • Preserve newlines if your source already has meaningful line breaks; let Format HTML re-indent from scratch otherwise.
  • Script, style, pre and textarea contents are never re-indented or whitespace-collapsed, so embedded code stays byte-for-byte intact.
  • Everything runs locally in your browser — your HTML is never uploaded, so it is safe to format private or sensitive markup.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does HTML Formatter do?
It beautifies messy HTML into clean, consistently indented code, minifies it into the smallest readable form, and validates tag balance so you can spot missing or unexpected closing tags. Indentation, whitespace handling and comment removal are all configurable.
How does the formatter handle embedded code?
The contents of script, style, pre and textarea elements are never re-indented, re-wrapped or whitespace-collapsed — JavaScript, CSS and preformatted text stay byte-for-byte identical, so you never have to worry about the formatter corrupting embedded code.
Does it preserve my attributes and tags?
Yes. Tag names, attribute names, their order and casing, single or double quote style, entities, doctype, conditional comments, unicode (Tamil, Hindi, Arabic, CJK and emoji) and custom elements are all preserved exactly as you wrote them.
What is the difference between Format and Minify?
Format indents every nesting level and adds clean newlines for readability. Minify removes comments, collapses inter-tag whitespace and squeezes the document down to the smallest size that still renders identically — useful when saving bytes for production.
How does validation work?
Validation walks the tag stack and reports elements that were opened but never closed, and closing tags that appear unexpectedly, each with the line where the problem occurs. Void elements (br, img, hr, input and similar) and optional-closing elements (li, td, p and similar) are not flagged.
What sizes of HTML can I process?
Up to 5,000,000 characters per input are supported. Everything runs locally in your browser, so there is no upload limit — larger documents are limited only by your browser's memory.
Is my HTML uploaded or stored?
No. Formatting, minification and validation all run in your browser. Your HTML is never uploaded to any server, and no account is required.
