Ready

Base64 is an encoding format, not encryption. Anyone can decode Base64 — never use it to protect passwords or sensitive data.

Your text is encoded and decoded locally in your browser. Nothing is uploaded to any server, and no account is required.

How it works

  1. 1Choose a mode. Select Encode to turn text into Base64, or Decode to turn Base64 back into readable text.
  2. 2Enter your input. Paste plain text (Encode) or a Base64 string (Decode). The tool accepts Unicode — Tamil, Hindi, Arabic, CJK, emoji — and handles it as UTF-8.
  3. 3Pick your options. Choose the Base64 variant (Standard or URL-safe, or Auto Detect when decoding), decide whether to keep padding, and toggle whitespace tolerance and strict validation.
  4. 4Encode or decode. Click Encode to Base64 or Decode Base64 (or press Ctrl+Enter). Copy, download, or feed the result back into the input — all locally in your browser.

Best practices

  • Remember that Base64 is an encoding, not encryption — never use it to protect passwords, tokens or personal data.
  • When the decoded bytes are not valid UTF-8, the tool tells you instead of showing gibberish — Base64 can hold arbitrary binary data, not just text.
  • Use URL-safe Base64 when the result will live in a URL, file name or JSON web token; Auto Detect makes decoding effortless.
  • Keeping padding produces spec-compliant Base64 that any library can decode; removing it matches many web APIs and JWT payloads.
  • Everything runs locally in your browser, so it is safe to encode or decode private or sensitive content.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Base64?
Base64 is a way of representing binary data — or in this tool, UTF-8 text — using only the 64 safe ASCII characters A–Z, a–z, 0–9, + and / (plus = for padding). It is used in emails, URLs, JSON web tokens, data URIs, and many APIs.
What does Base64 Encode Decode do?
It converts plain text into its Base64 representation (encode) and converts Base64 back into readable UTF-8 text (decode). Both directions run instantly in your browser with support for standard and URL-safe alphabets, padding options and strict validation.
Is Base64 encryption?
No. Base64 is an encoding format, not encryption. Anyone who receives a Base64 string can decode it without any key, so it must never be used to protect passwords or sensitive data.
Can it encode Tamil, Hindi and emoji?
Yes. The tool converts text to UTF-8 bytes before encoding and decodes back through UTF-8, so Tamil, Hindi, Arabic, CJK, emoji and mixed-language text are preserved exactly with no character corruption.
What is URL-safe Base64?
URL-safe Base64 replaces the standard + and / characters with - and _ so the encoded string can appear safely in URLs and file names without escaping. Auto Detect in decode mode works out whether the input uses the standard or URL-safe alphabet.
Does Base64 require padding?
Standard Base64 pads the output with = characters so its length is a multiple of four. Many systems strip that padding; this tool can keep or remove it when encoding, and it automatically accepts padded and valid unpadded Base64 when decoding.
Why does Base64 sometimes end with =?
The = characters are padding added so the encoded length is always a multiple of four. One or two = signs appear when the original byte count is not divisible by three.
Can it decode Base64 without padding?
Yes. Valid unpadded Base64 (for example SGVsbG8gV29ybGQ) is accepted and the required padding is restored automatically before decoding.
Is my text uploaded?
No. All encoding and decoding happens locally in your browser. Your text is never uploaded to any server and no account is required.

Supported input

Encode any UTF-8 text — English, Tamil, Hindi, Arabic, CJK, emoji and mixed-language content — or decode standard and URL-safe Base64, padded or unpadded, directly in your browser. Up to 1,000,000 characters per input are supported. Whitespace in Base64 input can be ignored, and strict validation rejects malformed strings.

Privacy & data removal

Your text is encoded and decoded entirely in your browser and is never uploaded to any server. No account is required to use Base64 Encode Decode, and we never store or share your text.
